The Providence Housing Authority (PHA) has been awarded a Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) grant in the amount of $196,744 by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These grant funds will enable the PHA’s Resident Services Department to continue working with social service agencies, community colleges, businesses, and other local providers to help public housing residents and individuals participating in HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher Program advance their education or gain marketable skills that will help them get a job or advance in their current career.
FSS funding will support two Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) Coordinators. These Coordinators work directly with residents to connect them with a broad spectrum of programs and services that already exist in the local community. These services enable participating families to find jobs, increase earned income, reduce or eliminate the need for rental and/or welfare assistance, and make progress towards achieving economic independence and housing self sufficiency.
The Providence Housing Authority has been offering the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program since 1995. Sorrel Devine, Director of Resident Services, said, “We are thrilled that we will be able to continue offering this valuable program to residents at the PHA. Over the years, this program, which features an escrow savings account option, has helped countless residents move up and out of subsidized housing and get on the path to economic success.”
