[text_output]Housing fraud is a criminal act in which individuals, groups or a business steals taxpayer money from HUD and/or its programs.
Public Housing or Section 8 tenants or applicants who make false statements regarding income or family size, or alter documents, are committing fraud. Leaving out or hiding information with the intent to deceive the PHA is also considered fraud. Leaving out or hiding information with the intent to deceive the PHA is also considered fraud. Fraud can also be committed by Section 8 landlords who are violating the Section 8 landlord regulations.
The PHA and HUD take fraud very seriously as it is a federal offense. in 2008, the PHA established a Fraud Department that investigates fraud and any fraud related complaints. Committing fraud at the PHA can result in:
- Administrative Action
- Repayment Agreements or Restitution
- Eviction
- Elimination from the program involved (Public Housing or Section 8)
- Criminal Charges
